Health Care

Since its foundation in 1769, Semmelweis University has paid special attention to the continued development and expansion of its health care services. As a result, the University has developed into one of the largest health care institutions in Hungary.

The University provides a wide range of acute, chronic and rehabilitation services to an average of 145,000 outpatients and 9000 inpatients each month, covering approximately six percent of the entire Hungarian population’s health care needs.

Semmelweis University has a total of 2176 hospital beds (as of January 2012), of which 2096 are reserved for acute and 80 for chronic patients.

At Semmelweis University, students learn their profession directly by the bedside of patients; the meaningful experiences gained during their practical training period serve to strengthen their commitment to the medical profession.

Over the years, Semmelweis University has received numerous national and international honours for its high quality health care services, a true testament to its commitment to not only meeting, but surpassing the needs of those who entrust the University with their health and wellbeing. In 2009, Hungarian patients voted the University’s Heart Centre “Hospital of the Year”, while the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the 1st Department of Surgery and the Department of Vascular Surgery each received distinctions in the award ceremony the following year. In 2011, FIFA accredited the Department of Traumatology and the Heart Centre as “FIFA Medical Centres of Excellence” in recognition of their superior services for the treatment of, in this case, football-related injuries.

In addition to providing direct patient care, Semmelweis University also contributes to the improvement of health awareness through the widespread dissemination of health-related information. Actively working toward the preservation and improvement of the nation’s most valuable natural resource – the health of its citizens – the University fills an indisputably significant societal role.
